Three times, Elijah told Elisha, "Stay here, for the Lord has sent me on." It looked like rejection. It was actually a test.
Jeremy explains: "Loyalty is proved in the transition, not the tenure." Before you hand over authority, you must know if the person is committed to the *mission* or just the *benefits*. Elisha passed because he refused to be shaken off. Leaders looking for successors must test for grit. Followers looking for mantles must refuse to be offended by the test.
When Elisha asked for a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit, Elijah didn't say "Sure." He said, "You have asked a hard thing."
Why hard? Because double authority means double responsibility. It means double the pressure and double the warfare. Jeremy warns: "If you want the authority, you must handle the difficulty." Capacity isn't given; it is forged. You cannot inherit what you do not have the character to sustain.
When Elisha was called, he was a wealthy farmer. To follow Elijah, he took his oxen, slaughtered them, and used the wooden plows as fuel to cook the meat for the people.
"You cannot take the new mantle while holding onto the old security." Elisha burned his Plan B. He eliminated his exit strategy. This level of "all-in" commitment is the price of admission for high-level leadership. You can't lead the future if you are keeping a safety net in the past.

The mantle of leadership doesn't fall on you while you are sleeping; you have to pick it up. When Elijah was taken up, his cloak fell to the ground. Elisha had to physically bend down, pick it up, and strike the water.
